PROJECT 2 : Openings

A door or a window? Which is more preferable for an opening?

Scheming through the Dutch paintings of the 18th Century or of Edward Hoppers in the early 20th Century, with both types of painting my mind was concentrated on Edwards Hoppers paintings as they grabbed my interest more. Skipping through the 20th Century paintings I had realised that most of Hopper’s painting were about sadness, sorrow, depression but simultaneously about light, openings and mystery. From looking up a few paintings, the one that really caught my mind was “Room by the Sea.”

The results of a quick glimpse of the painting are;

- There are no humans

- A door opened directly to the sea

- Closed space

- There are 3 spaces, main room, 2nd room at the back and sea

- There is a colour change in the carpet

- The door opened has let light in, thus the room was dark and dull

- There is a 2nd opening in the 2nd room seen by the light entering

- Door open to freedom
